Usually mum needs only stay in hospital for a day or two before their new life begins.
It was far from this kind of normal start though for first-time parents Gemma McGruddy and Will Thorne from Mount Beauty.
The very fact that Amelia and Adrian arrived three months early meant for a shaky start for all.
It is understandable then when mum and dad say they were terrified for their babies.
Not only was there a good chance that Amelia and Adrian would not survive — even if they did, it was equally possible that they would suffer from a severe disability.
One year later and the world could not look any brighter for this young family.
Amelia and Adrian are your regular variety of happy, healthy babies.
That is all thanks to a lot of support, medical expertise and, no doubt, a lot of love.
The twins’ first birthday at their Mount Beauty home on Saturday was certainly a great cause for celebration.
We join with the whole community in passing on our birthday wishes.
