Police said the man, 38, had been travelling towards Benalla on the Benalla-Baddaginnie Road at 2.15pm yesterday when they clocked his Holden sedan at 67km/h over the speed limit.
The driver told police he thought he had been driving at 140km/h on the 100km/h road.
Sen-Constable Damian Melnyk said the man’s car would be impounded for a month.
“He had no real reason for speeding, he knew it was the wrong thing and he got caught,” Sen-Constable Melnyk said.
“It will cost him $1700 to get his car back.
“It is something that is a concern because it is hard to change the mindset, no matter how much you advertise it.
“It’s an ongoing issue and people need to be more vigilant with their speed.”
The driver was the registered owner of the vehicle and will be charged on summons.
Sen-Constable Melnyk had a warning for other motorists.
“Police are vigilant, there are more and more of us out there, if you’re going to break the law you are going to get caught and pay the consequences,” he said.
“People caught speeding can face conviction, fines, prison time — it depends on the individual and their history.
“They can also face suspension, disqualification or loss of licence, a whole range of punishments depending on the circumstances.”
