A true account of what has been going on at ward level and sadly true that the union has been notified and appears to be doing nothing about it.
Mothers and babies are having to wait for assistance while maternity staff are attending to post-operative, general and gynaecological and medical patients.
Mothers’ length of stay has increased due to more women having caesarean sections than vaginal births, and therefore need to stay longer for pain relief and routine care.
In addition to length of stay, the workload for midwives is increased when women have caesarean sections and yet the staff ratios are not increased to cover the additional workload.
While all midwives try their hardest to give women and their babies the best possible care, there is an increasing chance of increased clinical risk to them all when the midwives are over their ratios.
