The 400-plus senior game player will coach United with Dave Smith.
Scott Kidd, who led the seniors to a record seven cups in 17 years, will take on the job of developing juniors.
Campbell, 40, said his decision had been made easier by having Smith and Kidd on board.
“I’m not sure coaching a senior side is a one-person job any more,” he said.
“Having Dave with his knowledge, experience and enthusiasm is a great plus. I see this as very much a joint venture.
“Everyone knows how successful Scott was. His role in recent years with the lower grades will continue. We’ll have the benefit of his experience as well on game day.”
Campbell said the skill level and football knowledge of juniors was much greater than when he joined United in 1982.
“There is so much soccer on television these days — when I was growing up you would see an EPL highlights package once a week,” he said.
“Seeing it rubs off on this generation.
“So these guys are skilful and know the game.
“Having been here through those years when we were winning the Cup and leagues, I guess I know what successful soccer looks like.
“I coached a group of juniors for several years until 2012 and then took over as women’s coach late last season.
“After more than 500 games of senior and reserves football, hopefully I can bring some of that to this role.”
Club president Chris Rochford said Campbell’s playing record and coaching experience made the transition to senior men’s coaching logical.
“Matt, who is a life member, has been with United since 1982 and has played more than 400 first-grade games. He will be a great asset,” he said.
“Dave took on the senior assistant coaching role this year and has built a good rapport with the playing squads.”
Rochford said the continued involvement of Kidd would help build the skills and knowledge of the rest of the coaching team.
