Students from 14 schools took part in the Albury-Wodonga Solar Car Challenge yesterday following a practice session two weeks ago.
The event is the culmination of about four months of work, with students building their own vehicles and learning skills in the process.
Wilson Transformer general manager John Retford said the race helped connect students with people from various industries.
“It’s about working with people in a manufacturing environment to make a car,” he said.
“It’s a bit of fun, but it is about relationships.
“There was a pretty exciting atmosphere.
“I call it a celebration of the effort the students have put in.
“There’s a lot of respect because everyone has put in the effort and you can see the goodwill among the teams.”
Mr Retford said the sunny skies had helped the cars, but clouds would have made the race “a bit more interesting” given the additional challenge.
“There were so many students who got something out of it,” he said.
“A lot would have come away with something from the day.”
Albury Wodonga Community College teacher Steven Kitos said his students had enjoyed the event and had learnt new skills from building the car.
