Every Melbourne Cup weekend, top international and Australian jazz and blues musicians flock to the growing city and its surrounds, enriching Wangaratta’s culture, boosting the North East economy and allowing locals and visitors to have a darn good time.
Six-times Grammy Award-winning drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava and blues guitarist Joe Louis Walker are among the festival’s international jazz and blues contingent for 2014.
More than 300 musicians will perform at 80-plus concerts, from Friday, October 31 and Monday, November 3.
This year there is a special reason to celebrate — it’s the festival’s silver anniversary.
Artistic director Adrian Jackson, who has been involved with the festival since the first in 1990 says the event has grown strongly from humble beginnings.
“Twenty-five years is a landmark that no-one would have been willing to bet on back when the Festival began as a relatively modest but ambitious event in 1990,” he says.
“The fact that we have made it this far is due to the incredible support the Festival has received from the local community, and the way it has been embraced so enthusiastically by musicians and music lovers from around Australia and overseas”.

Behind the Lines 2013 tells the tale of broken parliamentary alliances, caucus instability, leadership spills, prime ministerial change, corruption scandals, cabinet reshuffles, policies and opinion polls. enjoy this selection of works from Australia’s best political cartoonists, chosen from almost 900 submissions, as well as cartoons from the Museum of Australian Democracy’s own collection. This travelling exhibition from the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House is supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians. Our poster is based on the original poster designed by artist Charles Conder for the 1889 exhibition. It features a woman entangled in binding, symbolic of the binding of conventions. The early Impressionists broke with traditional realist style, paving the way in Australia for all the Modernist styles we see in 20th century art and the amazing variety of styles we see hanging on contemporary gallery walls. Visit the studio of artist and GOTAFE Wangaratta printmaking teacher Barbel Ullrich at 1002 Mountain Creek Road, Tawonga to see her collection of art works inspired by the local environment. Her creations are mostly collagraphs in mixed media using natural objects such as ferns and leaves, paint and printing. Collagraphy is a printmaking process in which materials are applied to a rigid substrate (an underlying substance or layer). Bright Art Gallery presents another spectacular exhibition of Aboriginal art never before seen in North East Victoria. Works have been selected from the very best of the Dreamtime Lo Spirito Dell’Arte Aborigena exhibition shown in Italy in 2011. This exhibition was the largest and most diversified exhibition of indigenous art ever shown overseas. Wangaratta is the only Victorian host venue for The National Photographic Portrait Prize 2014, an annual exhibition by the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra intended to promote the very best in contemporary photographic portraiture by both professional and aspiring Australian photographers. Located three hours west of Alice Springs, Warlukurlangu Artists’ Aboriginal Corporation is one of the longest running and most successful Aboriginal-owned art centres in Central Australia. Warlukurlangu means ‘belonging to fire’ in the local language, Warlpiri, and is named for a fire dreaming site west of Yuendumu. See this exhibition of Warlukurlangu artists and their gloriously colourful acrylic paintings. A series of interactive workshops for adults and children will be run in collaboration with Indigenous artists from the area.

An exhibition of landscapes from the school of Australian Impressionism. The imageS of Australia’s landscape haVE touched the imaginations of artists for centuries. It was a key source of inspiration to artists of the nineteenth and 20th century and they produced a large volume of work depicting people, places and landscapes using ‘impressionist’ techniques with quick, broad strokes to capture the light and colour they saw as they painted. The paintings and watercolours in this exhibition are drawn from the Alec Cato Collection, Wesley College, Melbourne and the Benalla Art Gallery Collection. Australian painters include Arthur Streeton, Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts, Hans Heysen , Penleigh Boyd and others as they travelled to all to all four corners of Australia. The works on display have rarely been exhibited. Floor talks by Kenneth Park, Curator of Collections at Wesley College are scheduled to take place during the exhibition.

An exhibition of still life art and vintage fashion by Chiltern artist Meaghan Aitchison (Meaghan Louise). Meaghan was raised and educated in Corowa and has a degree in Fine Arts. She has owned and run the DCI (Dream, Create, Inspire) Art Gallery in Chiltern for the last six years, recently closing the gallery to give herself more flexibility and spend more time working in her home studio. Her exhibition features still lifes and flowers, inspired by old vases from the antique shops of Chiltern, as well as her unique range of new “vintage” clothing designed and made by Meaghan Louise and based on the materials and patterns of old. She says of her work: “The message…is simple and direct. It’s all about finding beauty, expressing an atmosphere and creating an aura”. This compelling multimedia exhibition is on permanent display in the main galleries of the Albury Library Museum. Crossing Place uses objects, audio and film to tell the story of Albury from first contact with the Wiradjuri people, traditional owners of the land, to the city we share today. Highlights include Wiradjuri Talkback, celebrating the perspectives and traditional knowledge of the region’s Aboriginal people and The Bonegilla Story, exploring the immigration experiences of those who passed through the migrant reception centre at Bonegilla. The exhibition is told through objects, audio and film, is on permanent display in the main galleries of the Albury Library Museum. Located at Colonel Tom Price Lines, North Bandiana on the eastern edge of Wodonga, the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Museum’s aim is the preservation, interpretation and display of artefacts and documents related to light horse and armoured units that make up the lineage of the 8/13 VMR. These units include the 8th (Indi) Light Horse, the 13th (Gippsland) Light Horse, the 20th (Victorian Mounted Rifles) Light Horse, the 2/8th Armoured Regiment, 41st, 42nd and 43rd Landing Craft Companies, the 8th Cavalry Regiment, the 13th Armoured Regiment and the 20th Motor Regiment. The focus of the new museum is an Honour Wall that was constructed with a grant from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, “Their Service-Our Heritage” Program. It features a central Commemorative Alcove watched over by a mounted light horseman, and flanked by two six-metre long uniform cabinets.
BONEGILLA MIGRANT EXPERIENCE, BONEGILLA

With National Heritage listing, Block 19 Bonegilla has become part of the narrative of nation. A two-metre plinth on site declares the place to be ‘a symbol of post-war migration which transformed Australia’s economy, society and culture’. Twelve kilometres from Wodonga on Lake Hume, Block 19 was one of 24 similar blocks built in the Bonegilla complex as an army camp during World War II. It became the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training centre in 1947, and housed migrants until 1971. The original camp covered a 130 hectare area. Its style of accommodation was basic with timber framed, corrugated iron army hut buildings providing staff and migrants with housing, offices and communal kitchen, dining and toilet facilities. Now, Block 19 Bonegilla is a public memory place. The site and its associated oral, written and pictorial records in the Bonegilla Collection at the Albury Library Museum bring to light post-war immigration policies and procedures that changed the composition and size of the Australian population. They provide evidence and insights into post-war migration and refugee experiences. For the migrants who spent time at the centre and their descendants, the site and its records are resources for personal, family and group histories. For Wodonga and the region, they provide a backdrop for the rich multicultural fabric of the area. For the broader Australian community, they help represent the role of Australia as the ‘host’ nation. Both the site and its records have powerful connections for many people. JINDERA PIONEER MUSEUM

The first German settlers arrived in the Jindera area in 1867, having trekked from Adelaide in horse drawn wagons. Before they arrived, probably in the 1840s, a small wattle and daub hut was built just off the main track through town. This hut still stands at the site of the Jindera Pioneer Museum, and probably is the oldest remaining cottage or house in the Albury District. In 1874 Mr Johann Rosler and Mr Peter Wagner built a store and three room residence on this same sight. It became known as Wagner’s Store. Formed in 1967, the Jindera Pioneer and Historical Society purchased Wagner’s Store, the residence, and the grounds around the wattle and daub hut, and restored them to their original condition. It IS filled will all kinds of articles —furniture, household goods and machinery, gathered into an original and historic setting of old world architecture and charm. Wander through the fully furnished general store and residence and down to the Pioneer Slab Hut and the original wattle and daub cottage, and then on to the huge machinery shed with its large collection of farm machinery and equipment. YACKANDANDAH MUSEUM

The museum is housed in the Bank of Victoria building, 21 High Street, Yackandandah. Building began in 1860. The cottage at the rear was an original street building of the 1850s. Banking ceased in 1893. Thereafter Thomas Haig, tailor, and his family, worked and lived in the building until 1969. The collection held by the Yackandandah and District Historical Society, which is based at the museum, is a large and comprehensive collection of the many stories of this district, held in photographs, images, objects, registers, documents, letters, textiles, digital forms and research material. It is almost fully catalogued on a specific cataloguing data base, much of it is also either digitally scanned or photographed. It is always a work-in-progress, receiving deposits, creating material or updating processes. Extensions to the purpose-built storage have added necessary storage space to a building originally built in 1996. This collection is used for rotation of displays, our own publications, research and display, as well as outside requests for research, copies or access to material. Specific requests must be made by appointment to allow for retrieval or collation of material. CHILTERN ATHENAEUM MUSEUM

The present brick building was erected in 1866, replacing an earlier timber construction, and used as Council Chambers, Town Hall and Library/Reading Rooms. When the Library was relocated in 1970 many old books remained in the present building forming an interesting collection of Goldfields reading matter in the original setting. About this time the Chiltern Athenaeum Museum was formed by enthusiastic members of the public who operate the museum on a volunteer basis. See a collection of novels and publications by local authors: Henry Handel Richardson, who penned, amongst other stories, The Fortunes of Richard Mahony and The Getting of Wisdom; Mary Gaunt, daughter of Judge Gaunt, goldfields magistrate, who wrote Kirkham’s Find and several travel tales; and Wilfred Busse whose History of Chiltern gives a wonderful insight into the development of our areas. There’s also a display of memorabilia relating to Chiltern-born Sir John “Black Jack” McEwen, who became Prime Minister after the disappearance of Harold Holt and a series of paintings by Alfred William Eustace, a self-taught artist and poet, who came to this area in 1852 and was employed as a shepherd on the Eldorado Run. A First World War honour roll is a dominating feature of the Chiltern Athenaeum and forms the central point of an ongoing collection of photographs, profiles, medals, certificates and other memorabilia relating to Chiltern and district people who served in both World Wars. The Museum also houses photographic displays and an outdoor exhibition featuring our mining and agricultural past and long with microfilm of the local newspaper The Federal Standard (1859-1970), an extensive collection of local family histories and community records enable the volunteers to carry out family and historic research. Home to seventeen stationmasters and their families from 1883-1979, the Station House is a tangible reminder of the great railway expansion of the last century. For more than a century, Station House has dominated the railway scene in Culcairn. Together with the historic Culcairn Railway Station, the complex reflects the significance of Culcairn as a major rail junction of the steam era. Culcairn is now serviced by XPT trains daily. Station House has been faithfully restored and was the winner of the 1994 Tidy Towns Award for Cultural and Heritage Protection. The two-storey brick building with its beautiful wrought iron and stairway together with the original floors and ceilings is one of the best examples of a building of its type in Australia. The Henty Observer Printing Museum is housed in the original 1934 brick building of The Observer newspaper. Visitors can observe how the newspapers of yesteryear were printed and how much printing has changed since then. The museum is home to a variety of Platen machines, some pre-1900, one of the original Wharfedale printing machines of 1907, a large Miehle auto printer, linotype machines, newspaper folding machines, a guillotine and other printing memorabilia of historical interest. Up periscope and dive aboard HMAS Submarinin beautiful parkland. There’s also a large scale model of Lt Norman Holbrook VC’s submarine BII (the town of Holbrook was named after the courageous British World War I submariner. The museum display includes an extraordinary hologram display in the 40-seat theatre in which Lt Holbrook’s wife, Mrs Gundula Holbrook, tells the fascinating story of her husbands’ brave exploits on B11 in 1914 and the subsequent change of the town’s name from Germanton to Holbrook. There are two rooms full of interesting information and artefacts including an original torpedo tube with a torpedo mounted. Sit in the officers’ wardroom and experience what it would be like to live in a submarine before going aft into the red lights of the control room and peeking through a periscope for 360-degree views of Holbrook. There’s also a photographic exhibition depicting how the Otway was transported to Holbrook and re-built in the town. HMAS Submarine Otway and the Submarine Museum are in Submarine Park, Holbrook.

This large, unique and varied display of historical treasures includes the best collection of submarine artefacts in Australia. There’s also an exhibition on the Holbrook bypass. The Woolpack Inn Museum is a two-storey heritage listed historic building located in the main street of Holbrook. The original Woolpack Inn was opened in 1839 by John Mitten and continued trading until it was destroyed by fire in 1895. All of the items on display have been donated by local residents over many years and now fill 22 rooms, depicting life in the 19th century include bedrooms, dining room, sitting room, kitchen, pantry and laundry, along with a number of other rooms filled with interesting items from bygone years. Relocated and erected in the grounds is a drop slab school house, built in about 1872, a replica of the old Holbrook bakery, a blacksmith’s shop and a large collection of old machinery, wagons and coaches. The Kiewa Valley Historical Society aims to preserve and conserve the history and heritage that is unique to the Kiewa Valley and surrounding Bogong High Plains situated in North East Victoria. Through the use of permanent, and temporary exhibitions, information walls, a photo gallery, a diorama of the Bogong High Plains, a model hydro system, and two DVD screens we show the area’s history and highlights, that tell our social history, natural science areas and technological developments. The collection has many items that show the social history of how the first settlers of the Kiewa Valley and Mount Beauty lived, worked and socialised. One of the towns few surviving miner’s cottages has been relocated and lovingly restored with a new museum added on behind. You can’t miss it, with the enormous Tronoh dredge bucket and a four-headed gold mining battery out front. Learn about the early gold mining days, mountain cattlemen, ski pioneers, St Bernard’s Hospice, the building of the Hotham Road constructed completely using hand tools in the 1860s as well as the wonderful array of colourful characters who have played a part in Harrietville and district’s past. The display includes original home-made horse snowshoes used for hauling supplies up to Mount Hotham and hand-carved artefacts from the town’s old Chinese Joss House. Catch a glimpse of what daily life was like in Harrietville 100 years ago as you wander through the miner’s cottage. The Bright and District Historical Society welcomes you the heritage-listed former Bright Railway Station, now the Bright Museum, which features rolling stock typical of that used on the old Ovens Valley Railway. The museum covers railway history, gold mining history and also the social history of the area with local family histories and a photographic collection. A large number of Chinese miners worked in the goldfields and the museum has a reconstructed Chinese Joss House based on one destroyed in the Buckland Valley and has a diverse collection of artefacts from Chinese miners. The museum is open from 2pm to 4pm every Sunday afternoon except from mid-June to early September. During the summer, Easter and September school holidays and festivals the museum is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons. Originally built as the Beechworth Athenaeum in 1857, The Burke Museum is one of Australia’s oldest museums and is considered a “Museum of Museums” with its significant collections from the 1800s and contemporary internally produced and touring exhibitions. Following the death of Beechworth's former Superintendent of Police, Robert O'Hara Burke (of Burke and Wills fame) at Coopers Creek in 1861, the Athenaeum was renamed in his honour as The Robert O’Hara Burke Memorial Museum. Highlights include the RE Johns Aboriginal, Chinese and Natural History collections, The Ned Kelly Story including the Burke Museum Ned Kelly Collection plus The Street of Shops, a 19th century recreation of a Beechworth streetscape. Beechworth and the Ned Kelly story are inextricably linked. All four members of the Kelly Gang spent time in Beechworth Prison. Ned appeared in the Beechworth Courthouse on August 6, 1880 on a charge of murder. Kelly’s mother Ellen also appeared in the Beechworth Courthouse and was held in the Beechworth Prison for a short time. The Burke Museum is in Loch Street, Beechworth. The Stanley Athenaeum and Library is an historic brick building comprising a Main Hall and Back Room, erected in 1874. The Main Hall houses the Library, which boasts a large and diverse collection of books, housed in shelves around the building’s walls including more than 3000 volumes of fiction (adult and children’s) and non-fiction published between 1820 and 1970, including reference, biography, government, history, philosophy, poetry, politics, science and natural history and travel publications. A collection of early photographs of Stanley is also on display. The Library contains assorted historic library tables and other period furniture. The building is classified by the National Trust of Australia and is entered on the Australian Heritage Register and is used for public meetings and functions. The Stanley Athenaeum and Library is one of the few remaining locally owned public library buildings with collections in Victoria. The museum is operated by the Wangaratta Historical Society and is housed in the former Wangaratta Fire Station building in Ford Street. The collection features smaller items of historical significance — household, commercial, industrial, agricultural, military and more — from the Wangaratta district. There is also a collection of about 10,000 historic and recent photographs from the North East plus a collection of more than 3000 glass plate negatives taken by a former Wangaratta photographer. The lower floor of the museum comprises two display rooms and a research room while upstairs these is a storage area — approximately 160 square metres of floor space in all. The Benalla Aviation Museum offers a fascinating look at Australia’s military air training history, AT the historic home of a World War II RAAF pilot training school. Attractions include a unique collection of military training aircraft, a number of which are fully operational and available for passenger flights, and many related static displays. Located in an historic Bellman Hangar at Benalla Airport, just two hours from Melbourne on the Hume Freeway, visitors to the museum are welcomed by one of our knowledgeable volunteers, who will provide a personalised tour of the facility, answering any questions you may have. The museum is open on Wednesdays and Sundays from 9am to 3pm and other times can be arranged for groups by phoning (03) 5766 2455. Entry is $5 for adults, children free. The Museum is located in the historic home of the 11 EFTS Wartime Training Unit which was stationed at Benalla from 1941 to 1945, where 80 de Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moths operated from. Displays include working engines, a flight training simulator, period uniforms and photographs and a large collection of model aircraft. Among many other projects, members are restoring a Tiger Moth and have recently rebuilt a DH.100 Vampire T.33 Jet trainer for static display. Flights are also available in two fully restored ex-RAAF training aircraft — a rare de Havilland DH.84 Moth Minor and a CAC CA-25 Winjeel — as well as a Chinese trainer, the Nanchang CJ-6. This exhibition of personal photos, documents and memorabilia tells some of the stories of the 60,000 European post-war migrants who made their home at the Benalla Migrant Camp between 1949 and 1967. Mansfield Historical Society is located at the Mansfield Railway Station at the start of Mansfield town. The society preserves and promotes the history of the Mansfield region. Its archives contain a wealth of information about the history of Mansfield and the surrounding district including genealogical information, microfiche documents, photos, memorabilia, maps and an extensive clothing collection. The society has many books and photographs of the local area that are available for purchase and has made digital copies of their hundreds of photographs, cataloguing print material and clothing collections. The Finley Historical Museum and Log Cabin is a showcase of the heritage of the Finley District and provides the opportunity to step back in time and view those items that supported the lives of our pioneering rural families. Includes a replica of the log cabin home, which was the first permanent residence in the Finley district, at Myrtle Park in 1878. FINLEY RAILWAY MUSEUM
RAILWAY OF THE PAST
Finley was the first town selected in the 19th century for a Pioneer Railway. The rail was extended to Finley in 1898, at a time when NSW was experiencing financial difficulty. The Railways saved money by adopting the Pioneer Rail Standards for this, and some other stations that were connected at this time. The Pioneer system followed the US style to link into regional areas to boost trade and travel, but at low cost due to the harsh economic conditions of the time. Incredibly well preserved, Finley Station is one of the few Pioneer stations still standing, and is also host to the Finley Pioneer Railway Museum containing artefacts and real life railway stories. Take a guided tour with a volunteer and learn about the history of the Finley Pioneer Railway Station or simply have a look around at the on-site railway memorabilia dating back to the 1890s.

There is an extensive collection of exact replicas and originals including 30 storyboards and banners detailing the life of bushrangers and convicts, pistols and guns flag flown at Eureka Rebellion, Cat O’ nine tails and whipping post, shackles and locks and much more. The exhibition is housed adjacent to the Library in the Old Printery building, the historic printing office of the Jerilderie and Urana Gazette where Ned Kelly attempted to have his manifesto, The Jerilderie Letter, printed.
