It is quite erroneous to state, as Lex Stewart did (The Border Mail, October 23), that the Australian National Audit Office has consistently questioned the accuracy of the electoral roll.
To the contrary, in its 2002 report it stated “the Australian electoral roll is one of high integrity”. Many other inquiries conducted since have endorsed that assessment.
Since the loss of Senate ballot papers in Western Australia last year, the audit office has rightly become concerned about ballot-paper security, but that has got nothing to do with roll fraud.
If Mr Stewart is referring to the 27 cases of Indi enrolments recently referred by the Australian Federal Police, let’s wait for the outcome of the inquiry before jumping to any conclusions.
