Now motorists are being warned to take greater care in parts of Albury and Wodonga where kangaroos are being increasingly spotted in built-up areas as they move into our cities.

They are believed to be seeking food and wildlife rescue volunteers are reporting an increasing number of incidents where they are called out to help those animals injured when they have been hit by cars or hurt in suburban backyards.

So far the kangaroos have come off second best, with several killed by vehicles.

But Albury Council’s John Mulvey is also warning the kangaroos can be unpredictable in their interactions with humans and those caught unawares by the animals may be at risk of injury.

It is a matter of awareness. Kangaroos may find their way into local streets from nearby bushland and possibly into backyards.

People shouldn’t panic or attempt to catch the animals themselves; instead they should contact WIRES or the council and let them do their job.
