Now the Wodonga retiree is confident enough to exhibit his work — at Creators Artspace on the Lincoln Causeway this week.
On show will be the fruit of the labours of 22 residents who form four art groups at the Trudewind Road Neighbourhood House.
“I remember the teacher saying: ‘what have we got here’ when I tried to draw a bottle in the first class,” Mr Barrett said.
“Now, I have done more than 50 draw-ings.
“It has become very much a friendship group and I really enjoy the relaxation side of it.”
Facets, which opened on Wednesday, is open from 10am to 4pm until Sunday.
The exhibition features 75 works from the art groups in pastels, acrylics, oil and watercolour paint.
Co-ordinator Sue Lees said it involved six months of work.
“There are different levels of expertise and styles,” she said.
“This will hopefully be the first of many exhibitions.”
