The Deputy Premier Peter Ryan this week said the Wangaratta District Specialist School would be rebuilt at a new site if the government was returned to office this month.
But Mr Brooks, who visited Rutherglen and Baranduda yesterday, said there was no money allocated for the project.
He could not say yesterday whether his party would find the money to build a school.
“If they’re serious about this, they should have had it costed and provided a dollar figure to the people of Wangaratta before the election,” he said.
“I don’t think the people should be taken for mugs.”
Mr Brooks met principals from the region during yesterday’s visit and spoke of Labor’s plans for education.
The Opposition Leader, Daniel Andrews, recently announced plans to reintroduce technical schools in regional areas, but the North East missed out.
Mr Brooks said Labor’s education plans would “help kids in North East Victoria” more broadly.
Member for Murray Valley Tim McCurdy said the Wangaratta announcement did not have funding attached to avoid a rise in the price of likely sites.
“It’s hard to go shopping when someone knows how much money you’ve got in the bank,” he said.
Mr McCurdy said Labor’s support for tech schools was “a bit hypocritical” because “they were the ones who stood by as federal Labor got rid of the schools”.
