Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship holder and keeper Ben Hooppell had a major say in the men’s final, while sister Emma bagged a double in the women’s decider.
Organiser Ross Maggs said it was the third win in a row for the Newmarket Hotel team in the women’s event.
“We pick different sides each year so theoretically it shouldn’t happen but that is not the way it panned out,” he said.
“Emma Hooppell scored early and again before half-time in a 4-0 win (over Cosgraves Property Services) after they had a 2-2 draw in the final game of the round robin series.
“Her brother was a key to the X-Ray group’s 2-1 win over Party Oz Entertainment.
“Hooppell had a significant impact on the final by restricting Ian Beath to a single goal.
“In the end, just as the game looked like going into extra time, it was a well-planned set move by captain Andrew Wilkes that resulted in Jeremy Payne deflecting the winning goal just inside the right post.”
Maggs said the Hockey8s event had raised more than $16,000, which would be split between Give Me Five for Kids and the junior hockey development program.
