Their cause was aided by Thurgoona again prevailing over Albury to leave just half a win between the champions and Howlong.
Captain Daniel Krause said Howlong needed to win its last two games to make the final.
“The last time we played Corowa it was a draw so it was a shock,” he said.
“It puts us within striking distance and we believe we can match it with Thurgoona and Albury.
“Certainly having someone like Peter Miller playing at No. 2 is a bonus and he had a big win on Sunday, Tony Davis was comfortable all day at No. 1 before Lindsay Seymour took it to the last hole.”
Howlong takes on unbeaten Thurgoona at Thurgoona on Sunday.
“We have played there enough, we know the track and we know most of our opponents,” Krause said.
“In the first round we lost by half a game at home so we know we can mix it with them.”
Albury’s Bailey Stewart tightened his stranglehold on the pennant player of the year award with an 8/7 win over Jason Cawthray.
Thurgoona’s Mark Emerson easily beat Andrew Maggs 7/5 in his first game this season.
