THERE will be no Sunday Ovens and Murray football on the Border next year.
The league’s draw was released yesterday, showing Sunday football would be only played on some traditional derbies and holiday weekends.
All five Sunday games will be played outside Albury-Wodonga.
This year seven of the 18 rounds had at least one Sunday fixture, but that has been slashed to four next season.
O and M general manager Aaron McGlynn said the draw accommodated the clubs, with the majority giving Sunday football the thumbs down.
“We actually compiled 14 drafts before finalising the draw,” he said.
“We wanted to take into account club feedback while retaining the fixture policies and guidelines we have traditionally had.
“The feedback from most clubs is they have played on Sundays in the past and their preference for next season is not to.
“Clubs can still switch to a Sunday if the opposition agrees, but at this stage the majority of matches will be on a Saturday.”
Most of the traditional Sunday fixtures remain, starting with the tourist town Easter Sunday clashes, with Myrtleford and Yarrawonga hosting Albury and Wangaratta Rovers respectively.
The Wangaratta Derby between the Magpies and Rovers will both be held on Sundays in rounds 5 and 14.
The round 13 clash between Corowa-Rutherglen and Yarrawonga is the only other designated Sunday encounter.
The season will start with a fixture under lights on Good Friday, with Wangaratta hosting Wodonga Raiders.
It is one of four matches on the Easter long weekend to be played outside Albury-Wodonga.
Wodonga hosts North Albury on Easter Saturday in the only clash on the Border in the opening round.
The league has increased the number of night matches from one to four.
After Lavington hosted Wodonga in the only night match this year in round 1, the first three rounds in 2015 will feature games under lights, including a round 2 blockbuster between the Panthers and Yarrawonga at Lavington Oval.
Wangaratta will also host Albury under lights in round 3 and Wodonga in round 17, giving the Magpies three night games at Norm Minns Oval.
The first highly anticipated grand final rematch between heavyweights Yarrawonga and Albury will be at Yarrawonga on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend on June 6.
The reigning premier has been handed a friendly early draw and only plays one of last season’s other finalists — Corowa-Rutherglen in round 2 — in the opening six rounds.
