The $10.4 million allocation if the Coalition is re-elected has been lauded by the Victorian Farmers Federation.
“For too long roadside weeds and pests have been poorly managed and underfunded,” VFF president Peter Tuohey said.
“We commend the Coailtion for recognising the detrimental effect that roadside weeds and pests can have on farmers’ crops and viability.”
Mr Tuohey said statistics from the Department of Primary Industries show rabbit populations are Australia’s most costly pest animal causing more than $200 million in agricultural production losses each year.
There are many problem areas with roadside weeds through the North East, particularly in the Towong and Alpine council regions.
Local Government Minister Tim Bull and Agriculture Minister Peter Walsh said the government would extend its successful roadside weeds and pest management program if elected on November 29.
