The three and four-year-old kinder classes were among the guests at yesterday’s turning of the first sod for the Tallangatta Integrated Community Centre, a $2.1 million project that Towong Council hopes will breathe new life in the town centre.
Newly-elected mayor David Wortmann said the centre, which will bring a number of community services together under one roof, would “become the heart of the town”.
“The children are here to help us mark something big and by the look of their hard hats, I think they’re ready,” Cr Wortmann said, referring to the bright yellow plastic hard hats each child wore.
The new centre, to be built in Towong Street, will encompass kindergarten and childcare services, and maternal health and early childhood intervention services.
The kindergarten program will provide space for 66 children — 46 more than now offered.
There will also be a library, community services hub, council services and IT resource centre.
Cr Wortmann said it would not only service local families, but attract families to the region.
Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell, who attended the ceremony with Benambra MP Bill Tilley, said she was keen to see such centres in regional areas.
