But in line with a trend towards schoolies trips that promise more than the usual partying at some of the nation’s teenage holiday hotspots, some Border students have been heading away on adventures of a different kind.
Xavier High School’s Mason Collins is already in the Northern Territory on a four-week stint at Yuendumu, teaching at the indigenous community school and camping with young students on weekends.
He has undertaken the trip on his own as an extension of the school’s immersion program, a move Xavier is looking to repeat with future senior students.
Meanwhile, a dozen other students from six high schools will head to Cambodia on Sunday, joining their Rotarian chaperones in building a playground and painting buildings at a school in Siem Reap.
The trip, aimed at giving young people a taste of volunteer work, still provides the opportunity for fun and adventure.
It is an alternative many young people are now choosing and we wish all those on schoolies trips a safe journey and time away.
