Councillor Ross Jackson plans to move a motion stating that the council supports same-sex marriage.

Hume Phoenix female convenor Toni Johnson said she was in favour of the idea.

“We hope to get as many people to go to the council meeting as possible,” she said.

“Councillors are average people from across Albury.

“Geelong has passed the same motion with their councillors, we’re hoping Albury will follow suit and do the same.”

Ms Johnson said the gay and lesbian support group had put the call out on Facebook for people to attend the meeting.

“It doesn’t just have to be the gay community,” she said.

“It can be the wider community.

“If people support it, they can sit and watch it be passed. It will be a great moment.”

Mayor Kevin Mack said the motion involved sending a letter to the federal government expressing support for gay marriage.

“Because we represent the community, we need to determine through debate on Monday night if it has relevance to us,” he said.

“Whether it’s the business of council or not, I’m not really sure.

“It’s a motion before council and we’ll have to consider it.”

Cr Mack said the council would only play a small role in the issue.

“We can’t influence changes in legislation but we can certainly put our point forward,” he said.
