The Albury-based earthmoving business proposes to blast, crush and transport 50,000 tonnes of road base type rock each year for the next 20 years, operating 5½ days per week and generating two heavy truck and trailer loads back and forth every hour, and all the heavy machinery required to set up and maintain the quarry.
The problem is, the quarry is just up Hardys Road, very close to town and where a new residential subdivision of large lifestyle blocks has been opened up designated for rural living.
The Towong Shire has recognised that Tallangatta needs more new housing so that it can continue to prosper as a thriving small community.
As a parent, my utmost concern is the safety issue of having the quarry’s trucks on the road, a risk for anyone, especially children, walking, bike riding and horse riding on Hardys Road.
The road is not much more than a dirt track and would need to be widened and sealed to handle this increased traffic and there would be an increased risk caused by heavy trucks turning up onto the busy Murray Valley Highway.
Damage to the environment by noise and dust and removal of rocks is also a huge concern.
Let’s hope we all get in and show our objection at the meeting (and it’s still not too late to put an objection in writing).
The meeting is 10am, November 25 in Tallangatta’s Memorial Hall.
