Calling themselves Fish out of Water, the group has been formed to lobby for better swimming facilities across the Border with a longer-term goal of having an all-inclusive indoor aquatic centre to cater to year-round water activities and major competitions.
The group’s first goal is to have the swimming season extended by 10 weeks at the Albury pool, with the provision of morning and afternoon opening times to cater to lap swimmers.
They believe the move would be well patronised and alleviate frustrations on the part of those competitive swimmers and water sports competitors forced to travel to train during the winter months.
Fish out of Water has approached the council’s aquatics advisory committee to recommend their proposal to a future meeting of the council.
The question no doubt is whether it would be feasible to meet the costs of keeping the pool open for more than two months outside of the regular swimming season and then for only shortened hours in the morning and afternoon.
But the community is likely to hear more from the group as members pursue their goals.
