A LONG-awaited library and shire office building opens in Yackandandah today.
The $2.1 million building, on High Street, will have 4500 new books and 300 resources, including eBooks.
While Indigo Shire staff have been working in the new office for about a month, the public can use the building from today.
The shire’s manager for sustainable communities, Mark Florence, said Yackandandah had been the biggest user of the council’s mobile library service.
“The obvious demand for a static library in Yackandandah is going to be met by this new library,” he said.
“Tours of the facility have been well received.
“People have been very pleased with not only the layout but also the new books and resources.”
Mr Florence said the office would improve how the staff worked.
“The staff has been separated across different buildings and the condition of them has been pretty poor,” he said.
“This is an improvement from an efficiency and occupational health and safety perspective.”
Mr Florence said the project was delivered on time and on budget.
Indigo mayor Bernard Gaffney said the office project had been a top topic of discussion for about a decade.
Today’s opening follows the council’s recent 20th anniversary celebrations.
They were attended by former mayors and staff members and included a building tour.
Cr Don Chambers said the shire merger that created Indigo had been a success.
