Just before 5.30pm, the fire brigade received calls about billowing smoke.
Albury’s 50 by 30-metre landfill was alight and council staff were required to pull the burning rubbish out of the pit with a bulldozer to stop it spreading deeper than the surface.
About six RFS and two Fire and Rescue NSW tankers were on scene for about two hours to extinguish the blaze.
Albury Central fire brigade station officer Alex Marschall said they immediately stopped the fire from spreading.
“We were only dealing with a surface fire but if it continued it could have been a lot worse,” he said.
“We got it under control fairly quickly.”
Mr Marschall said the fire was an isolated incident and he did not believe it to be suspicious.
The cause was unknown and it was often difficult to identify the source in these type of incidents.
