The council has spent $50,000 on a Christmas tree for the city which will be unveiled on Thursday night.
The tree, which stands 12.5 metres tall, is situated in The Cube’s courtyard.
The council has said investing in a tree was sparked by requests and feedback from the community.
Cr John Watson said the council recognised that $50,000 was a lot of money but an insignificant amount when compared with the spending of other cities.
Geelong, indeed, splashed $1 million on its tree, much to the disgust of many in the city.
Clearly, Wodonga’s investment is far less excessive and offensive than that.
But there will be those who criticise the decision, and many will cite what they consider to be more worthy causes and projects that could have benefited from the money.
Many will suggest that with a massive debt, money shouldn’t be spent on anything.
While the desire to spread some Christmas cheer is clear, the council, with some of the highest rates in Victoria, must accept the flak from those who consider the decision a festive flop.
