Indeed the Northern Victoria Livestock Exchange at North Barnawartha looks set to boost the livestock industry and provide a valuable asset for the region.
Pity the same could not be said for the section of the Murray Valley Highway that serves the site which is wholly inadequate for the current traffic, let alone the expected increase in heavy vehicle traffic.
I have travelled that road regularly in the early hours of the morning on weekdays for several years to meet my daughter’s swim training commitments in Wodonga.
At 5.30am that road is at best nerve-racking and at worst, particularly in heavy fog or wet conditions, a nightmare.
To avoid the hazard, I now travel the longer route via the Riverina Highway which is of a higher standard and in my view much safer.
Residents Browns Plains and Barnawartha and beyond, however, do not have that luxury.
I hope that there is a plan to upgrade that section of the Murray Valley Highway, as if there is not there will almost certainly be consequences in terms of road safety.
