A hunting and game management action plan was launched by the Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh.

He said the plan would guide long-term industry growth and increase access to sustainably managed game resources.

“Victoria provides some of the best hunting opportunities anywhere in the world and is home to a responsibly and sustainably managed game hunting sector,” Mr Walsh said.

“There are more than 46,000 game licence holders who contributed an estimated $439 million to the state’s economy in 2013.”

Mr Walsh said the government understands the importance of hunting to rural and regional economies and is committed to promoting its long-term development.

He said the plan would define roles, set expectations and outline specific actions around hunting and game management for agencies.

“This action plan will boost hunting opportunities, develop the industry, improve wildlife and land management outcomes and promote responsible and humane hunting,” Mr Walsh said.

“The government recognises the importance of ensuring our game hunting sector is responsibly and sustainably managed.

“As part of this recognition, the action plan aims to further improve firearm safety, hunter education and training and compliance with regulations.

“Through improving access to game reserves and supporting tourism, the action plan will also enhance hunting opportunities for Victorian, interstate and international visitors.”

Mr Walsh said the new Game Management Authority will deliver elements of the plan in line with its role promoting responsible and sustainable game hunting.

The authority established on July 1 and fulfilled a Coalition election commitment.
