Flames were about four metres high and black plumes of smoke billowed from the vehicle parked in Young Street, beside The Scots School Albury.
The incident occurred about 4.15pm and police blocked a section of the road between The Astor on Young Street and up to Crisp Street.
At a business across the road, Embroidery Creations manager Tracey North’s attention was drawn to a hissing sound.
“I looked through the window and the van was on fire,” she said.
“There were flames about four metres high and a nearby tree started to catch fire.”
Albury Central station officer Dave Herbert said a man and girl were travelling along Young Street when the man could smell petrol and saw smoke.
