Monthly rainfall totals were well below the November averages except at some places in the Riverina and North East, where gaugings exceeded the average as a result of heavy thunderstorms mid-month and on November 24.
Coonabarabran completed the driest spring season since 1957 with only 55mm rainfall against an average of 175mm.
The previous drier springs at Coonabarabran included 49.7 in 1900, 37.0 in 1918, 28.1 in 1919, 53.3 in 1944 and only 10.4 in 1957.
As the spring season last year was also very dry, this makes a pair of dry springs equal to that of 1918 and 1919. In December 1919 heavy rain fell and a repeat episode is expected to happen this December generally in our regions.
Last month was the hottest November since 2009 generally. Others that were warmer included 1888, 1894, 1897, 1902 and 1919.
Coonabarabran last month completed the warmest spring season since 2002.
Other warmer springs included 1888, 1895-1897, 1919 and 1980.
The summers following these cases were generally hotter than normal and wetter than average.
Heavy rain fell last Sunday night at White Cliffs in NSW with 38mm falling to 9am Monday, already twice the December average.
Last Friday 102mm fell in Darwin almost a record daily fall for November at Darwin.
These events are good indicators of significant rain events this summer.
