At 5pm yesterday two female cafe workers ran from the building while three men had escaped about an hour earlier.
There was no doubt about the emotion of their escape with the two women seen running out of the cafe a few seconds apart and into the arms of heavily armed police officers.
Late yesterday police were asking the media to not report the gunman’s demands; some media withdrew earlier details they had broadcast but others revealed information police wanted kept from public release.
Police negotiations with the gunman were obviously tenuous and while Deputy Police Commissioner Catherine Burn confirmed contact had been made with the gunman, she would not speculate about his motive.
The exact number of those who remained in the building with the gunman had not been confirmed but the public and the media must heed all the requests of police in this situation and any other like it to assist in ensuring a peaceful resolution to a frightening situation.
