But at more than two metres tall and with three years of US college basketball under his belt Claybrin McMath may just be the next major piece in the Bandits’ puzzle.

The former AIS scholarship holder, 24, will head to the Border in the New Year after being part of the Townsville Crocodiles organisation in the NBL season.

Coach Brad Chalmers said the South Australian’s versatility would be a key to the Bandits’ success.

“Clay is an effective and talented combo forward who can play inside and out and is a developing offensive threat across the floor,” he said.

“He is also a willing defensive presence who uses his length and agility to his advantage, is a very good athlete overall, fantastic in transition and has a high basketball IQ linked with a desire and work ethic to improve as a player.”

Chalmers said the 203 centimetre McMath was an ideal replacement for Alex Opacic.

“Clay’s commitment to play with us for the season is exciting for the group and really helps offset the recent loss of Opacic,” he said.

“This signing continues the momentum we are building and keeps us moving in the right direction for 2015.

“Clay understands the step up to SEABL and his time within the Crocs organisation should help prepare him for the challenges ahead.

“I think the addition of Clay maintains our focus on adding athleticism to the group.

“He fits with the direction and style we are trying to play and it also gives us another upcoming player with which to work with, plus smarts and ability to play both ends of the floor.

“We see this as a great opportunity for Clay to showcase his skills in the strong SEABL competition.”

McMath is expected to join his teammates for training in January.
