James Mitchelhill’s 18th birthday started well yesterday with the news that he had placed 18th out of 10,000 candidates in the HSC legal studies exam.
He immediately messaged friends Daniel Johnston and Sai Ram Ramisetty and found they, also, had fared well.
“I was pretty excited," James said yesterday.
“I was really hoping to crack the top 10 but didn’t get it.
“I want to do arts at Melbourne University — it’s a 78 to get into.”
James also scored a Band 6 (marks of more than 90 per cent) in four subjects.
His legal studies success was enough to place him on the state’s top achievers list.

Daniel and Sai Ram, who were also among the school’s best, made the all-rounders list for gaining a Band 6 in 10 or more units.
Daniel said his marks should allow him to study science.
“I woke at 4am and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I waited until six o’clock when the results came out,” he said.
“I wasn’t too surprised at some of the marks but I did better in English than I thought I would.”
At St Paul’s College, Walla, Emma Schulz was named dux with a Band 6 in five of her subjects.
Year 11 student, Lara Rayner, performed well in two HSC subjects — 96 in music one and 95 in mathematics.
A delighted director of senior studies, Caroline Clancy said Lara’s achievements were nothing short of fantastic.
James Fallon High School had 68 students complete their HSC.
Principal Jennifer Parrett said the school prided itself on having six special education students achieve their HSC and students listed on the distinguished achievers list.
