The joint operation will see VIC police board the train in Melbourne and NSW police board from Sydney.
The officers will be cracking down on drug and alcohol use, property damage as well as any obscene language and offensive or threatening behaviour.
Transit Safety Division Inspector Darren Cooper said the joint approach to policing regional transport was "the way of the future".
"We know that crime occurs at public transport locations across the state, not just the Melbourne metro area. Working with NSW Police will ensure an effective and coordinated use of resources," he said.
“It’s that time of year when people may be travelling to regional areas to see their family and friends for Christmas and New Year and we want to make sure they get their safely."
The two teams will meet in Albury this afternoon and Victoria police will patrol buses in and around Wodonga before they head back to Melbourne on Friday.
