BEHIND THE LINES - THE YEAR’S BEST POLITICAL CARTOONS 2013 (UNTIL DECEMBER 14): 2013 will be remembered as a year of challenges for Australia’s political leaders, drama for their constituents, and endless inspiration for the nation’s cartoonists. Behind the Lines 2013 tells the tale of broken parliamentary alliances, caucus instability, leadership spills, prime ministerial change, corruption scandals, cabinet reshuffles, policies and opinion polls. Enjoy this selection of works from Australia’s best political cartoonists, chosen from almost 900 submissions, as well as cartoons from the Museum of Australian Democracy’s own collection. This travelling exhibition from the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House is supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians. ALBURY REGIONAL ART GALLERY: TEMPORARILY CLOSED BECAUSE OF MAJOR RENOVATIONS AND EXPANSION (DUE TO RE-OPEN JUNE 2015): After 32 years, the Albury Art Gallery has temporarily closed its doors to make way for a nine-gallery $10.5 million redevelopment to be known once more as the Albury Regional Art Gallery. The tranquil location is the site of the old Yackandandah Railway Station which is no longer operational as a railway station. NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT PRIZE 2014 — A NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY TOURING EXHIBITION (UNTIL DECEMBER 14): Wangaratta is the only Victorian host venue for The National Photographic Portrait Prize 2014, an annual exhibition by the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra intended to promote the very best in contemporary photographic portraiture by both professional and aspiring Australian photographers. This year’s National Photographic Portrait Prize attracted more than 1400 entries. National Portrait Gallery curator Dr Sarah Engledow, National Portrait Gallery senior curator Dr Chris Chapman and guest judge, acclaimed Australian photographer Greg Weight, selected the final 45 portraits that make up the exhibition.

BENALLA ART GALLERY

TRADITIONALISTS OF AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPE PAINTING (UNTIL FEBRUARY 15): An exhibition of landscapes from the school of Australian Impressionism. The images of Australia’s landscape have touched the imaginations of artists for centuries. It was a key source of inspiration to artists of the nineteenth and 20th century and they produced a large volume of work depicting people, places and landscapes using ‘impressionist’ techniques with quick, broad strokes to capture the light and colour they saw as they painted. The paintings and watercolours in this exhibition are drawn from the Alec Cato Collection, Wesley College, Melbourne and the Benalla Art Gallery Collection. Australian painters include Arthur Streeton, Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts, Hans Heysen , Penleigh Boyd and others as they travelled to all to all four corners of Australia. The works on display have rarely been exhibited.  Floor talks by Kenneth Park, Curator of Collections at Wesley College are scheduled to take place during the exhibition. 

COROWA ARTS SPACE

COROWA COLLECTION (OPEN DAILY): The Corowa Collection showcases the prize winners in all sections of the annual Federation Art Show that have been acquired by the Federation Art Show Committee and held in trust by Corowa Council for the past 14 years. This is the first time that these art works have been displayed together as a collection and for many of these works it is the first time they have been on public display. RED CROSS: 100 YEARS (UNTIL MAY 31, 2015): Part of the world’s largest humanitarian movement, Red Cross has been woven into the fabric of Australian life for 100 years, responding to natural disasters, providing a blood service and everyday work to help vulnerable people. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers signed up during World War I, and by World War II Red Cross had become Australia’s largest charitable organisation. CROSSING PLACE: A STORY OF ALBURY (ONGOING): This compellingmultimedia exhibition is on permanent display in the main galleries of the Albury Library Museum. Crossing Place uses objects, audio and film to tell the story of Albury from first contact with the Wiradjuri people, traditional owners of the land, to the city we share today. Wiradjuri Talkback and The Bonegilla Story are highlights.

ARMY MUSEUM BANDIANA

EXTENSIVE MILITARY DISPLAY (MONDAYS TO SATURDAYS — BY APPOINTMENT): The Army Museum Bandiana houses 190 army vehicles, dozens of field guns, weapons, uniforms, medals and items dating back to the 18th century are displayed in the museum at the Gaza Ridge Barracks, Anderson Road, Bandiana, near Wodonga. 8TH/13TH VICTORIAN MOUNTED RIFLES MUSEUM, NORTH BANDIANA

LIGHT HORSE AND ARMOURED EXHIBITIONS (PHONE FOR OPENING TIMES): The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Museum’s aim is the preservation, interpretation and display of artefacts and documents related to light horse and armoured units that make up the lineage of the 8/13 VMR. BONEGILLA MIGRANT EXPERIENCE, BONEGILLA

MULTICULTURAL HISTORY (OPEN DAILY): With National Heritage listing, Block 19 Bonegilla has become part of the narrative of nation. Twelve kilometres from Wodonga on Lake Hume, Block 19 was one of 24 similar blocks built in the Bonegilla complex as an army camp during World War II.  It became the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training centre in 1947, and housed migrants until 1971. CHILTERN ATHENAEUM MUSEUM

CHILTERN HISTORY (OPEN MOST DAYS): Highlights include memorabilia relating to Country Party leader Sir John (Black Jack) McEwen, whose father operated the local pharmacy from 1891 to 1907, a World War I photographic collection, artworks by Alfred Eustace including several gumleaf paintings and photographic and outdoor displays of Chiltern’s mining and agricultural past and an exhibition relating to the famous author Henry Handel Richardson, who lived in Chiltern. HARRIETVILLE HISTORICAL MUSEUM

HISTORICAL GEMS (OPEN SUMMER PUBLIC HOLIDAYS AND WEEKEND AFTERNOONS OR BY APPOINTMENT): One of the town’s few surviving miner’s cottages has been relocated and lovingly restored with a new museum added behind. BRIGHT MUSEUM

HISTORICAL BRIGHT (OPEN VARIOUS TIMES AND BY APPOINTMENT): The Bright and District Historical Society’s heritage-listed former Bright Railway Station, now the Bright Museum, features rolling stock typical of that used on the old Ovens Valley Railway. The museum covers railway history, gold mining history and also the social history of the area with local family histories and a photographic collection plus there is a  reconstructed Chinese Joss House. TIMES PAST (PHONE FOR OPENING HOURS): The Eldorado Museum holds a collection that reflects the life and times of the region from 1850 to 1950. The displays cover mining, farming and social history of Eldorado and surrounds and is housed in the old school building as well as in outside displays. WANGARATTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM

WANGARATTA AND NORTH EAST HISTORIC COLLECTION (OPEN SUNDAYS, TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS): This Wangaratta Historical Society museum is housed in the former Wangaratta Fire Station building in Ford Street. The collection features smaller items of historical significance — household, commercial, industrial, agricultural, military and more — from the Wangaratta district, a collection of about 10,000 historic and recent photographs plus a collection of more than 3000 glass plate negatives. BENALLA AVIATION MUSEUM

MILITARY AIR TRAINING HISTORY (OPEN WEDNESDAYS AND SUNDAYS): The Benalla Aviation Museum offers a fascinating look at Australia’s military air training history, at the historic home of a World War II RAAF pilot training school. Attractions include a unique collection of military training aircraft, a number of which are fully operational and available for passenger flights, and many related static displays. RUTHERGLEN COMMON SCHOOL MUSEUM

FEDERATION MUSEUM, COROWA

THE BIRTHPLACE OF FEDERATION (OPEN SATURDAY AND SUNDAY OR BY APPOINTMENT): Displays on Corowa’s role in Federation, Aboriginal artefacts including Tommy MacRae sketches, agricultural implements manufactured locally, horse-drawn vehicles and saddlery, 1900s lifestyle displays, Tom Roberts’ Shearing the Rams display and more. MAX’S MOTOR MUSEUM, COROWA

AUTOMOTIVE HEAVEN (OPEN SATURDAY TO MONDAY OR BY APPOINTMENT TUESDAY TO FRIDAY): See vintage to modern cars and motors from all ages including oil engines and a free-standing V-12 motor. Max Maclean’s private collection is a must-see and includes cars belonging to local enthusiasts who house their cars at the museum, corner Hammersley and Norseman roads, Corowa. YARRAWONGA MULWALA PIONEER MUSEUM

PIONEERING AUSTRALIA (OPENING HOURS BELOW): See one of the largest and most comprehensive exhibits of the early pioneering days of Australia. Housed in a spacious and modern facility, exhibits include sport and leisure, early aviation, vintage cars, dental surgery, community quilt, blacksmith’s shop and much more. BERRIGAN’S PAST (OPEN WEDNESDAY MORNINGS): The Museum features collections of a number of oral histories, Federation information, fire brigade memorabilia and material relating to the Berrigan RSL Club, including guns, medals uniforms and service records of Berrigan men and women who served in World War I and World War II. Open 9am to 11am Wednesdays.

FINLEY HISTORICAL MUSEUM AND LOG CABIN

CHRYSTIE’S MUSEUM, TOCUMWAL

TOCUMWAL’S YESTERYEAR (OPEN DAILY): Turn back the clock to the era of the classic cars, trucks, caravans, tractors and a host of other memorabilia and collectables. FINLEY RAILWAY MUSEUM

RAILWAY HISTORY (BOOKINGS BY APPOINTMENT): The well-preserved Finley Station is one of the few Pioneer stations still standing and is also host to the Finley Pioneer Railway Museum containing artefacts and real life railway stories. Take a guided tour with a volunteer and learn about the history of the Finley Pioneer Railway Station or simply have a look around at the on-site railway memorabilia dating back to the 1890s. ADJACENT TO THE LIBRARY IN THE OLD PRINTERY, JERILDERIE

DOING THE BOLT - CONVICTS AND BUSHRANGERS (OPEN BY APPOINTMENT): See an extensive collection of exact replicas and originals including 30 storyboards and banners detailing the life of bushrangers and convicts, pistols and guns flag flown at the Eureka Rebellion, cat o’ nine tails and a whipping post, shackles and locks and much more. The exhibition is housed next to the Library in the Old Printery building, the historic printing office of the Jerilderie and Urana Gazette where Ned Kelly attempted to have his manifesto, The Jerilderie Letter, printed.
