Tyrell reeled in Bushrangers captain Brad Collins, who led for most of the count, to win by six votes after hitting the lead in round 16 following a best-on-ground performance against Oakleigh.
Collins, from Numurkah, finished runner-up on 36 votes, with Shepparton utility Matt Hebbard (32 votes) and Wangaratta youngster Daniel Boyle (21) further back in third and fourth place.
Tyrell missed the cut for the Bushrangers squad last year but went on to win the O and M’s rising star award after a fine season with the Pigeons.
He was also a member of Yarrawonga’s premiership win over Myrtleford in the grand final this year.
Other award winners were Matt Hebbard for most improved, Matt Kelly received the coaches award, Tim McIntyre won the goal-kicking and Ben McEvoy took home the under 17 Ashley Cox Development Memorial Award.
Will Martiniello won the under 16 development player and Ben Reid won the trainers award.
