The exhibition, titled Namatjira and Beyond, shows the deep connection the late artist had with the bush.
Namatjira, who was born near Alice Springs in 1902 and died in 1959, used watercolours to vividly depict the Australian landscape.
The exhibition, which opened last night, also features large-scale contemporary works from post-modern artist Richard Dunn.
Gallery director Dianne Mangan said she “marvelled” at the diversity of both artists, with their skills shown in more than 100 works at the gallery.
“We are delighted to be able to present this outstanding exhibition of works to the people of Wangaratta and the region,” she said.
The exhibition was a highlight in the gallery’s calendar, she added.
Namatjira and Beyond opens to the public today and runs until February, with entry by gold coin donation. For information phone the gallery on (03) 5722 0865.
