The creation of a median strip between the Bayly and Inglis streets roundabouts that will contain street lighting is the next stage of a masterplan offered by Corowa Shire more than five years ago.
Works have purposely been planned to start in Melbourne Street in February after the peak holiday season, but the council has undertaken initial consultation to ensure the public is still on side to go ahead.
The council’s engineering director Nigel Sutton is overseeing the project in conjunction with NSW Roads and Maritime Services.
Mr Sutton has joined council since the original masterplan was hatched.
“We don’t have a blank cheque to go and do whatever we like,” he said.
“If you put a concrete strip down the middle it changes the way in which people can use the street.
“The median is nothing new, but because there have been a few years pass since it was adopted and we are at the point of delivering we need to know whether people are still supportive.
“There have been some opinions that weren’t supportive of the median and RMS felt it was proper to have another round of consultation.”
Mr Sutton conceded a “mixture of views” had emerged on the works.
“We want to know what people think and not railroad one view through,” he said.
The online survey closes today.
A copy of the proposed design has been on display at the Mulwala Civic Centre.
Mulwala Progress Association is supportive of the works, which could take two months to complete.
“It will be fantastic,” chairman Rob Purtle said.
“The feedback I’ve been getting is something needs to happen because there will be a major accident along there if it doesn’t.
“People are doing U-turns in front of trucks at the moment.”
A final decision is expected to be made in mid-January.
