Homeowners in the Emma Way and Crawford Circuit area of the estate, near Norris Park, reacted quickly on Sunday night, grabbing buckets of water to fight the fire spotted just before 10pm on Sunday night in Crawford Circuit park.

It followed two other fires about 12.30am on the Friday and Saturday nights near the corner of Hartwig Avenue and Union Road — and though each blaze was relatively small, the tinderbox-dry landscape has residents worried.

“For it to happen three nights in a row is very concerning,” said Trevor, who asked his surname not be printed for fear of retribution.

“The scary thing is, if you look how dry it is around here, it could have gone up like that ... I don’t think they (the arsonist) realise the consequence of what they’re doing.

“They’re putting lives at risk.”

Trevor was one of the residents who ran out to help extinguish the Sunday night fire, and described seeing flames four metres high springing from the small patch of grassland.

“To see flames that high is pretty scary when it’s so close to houses. I don’t think many of us are sleeping well now at all,” he said.

Another resident, Brenda Huckstepp, reported the Friday night fire after smelling smoke about 1am.

“All across the back it was like a wall of flames starting to come up,” said Mrs Huckstepp, who moved to the area in the past few days.

“You know you’re in a bushy area so it’s a risk but when they’re deliberately starting it ... you just have to be extra vigilant.”

Neighbour Lauren — who also asked for her surname to be withheld — reported the Saturday night blaze.

Others residents said they saw a person in a blue hoodie leaving the fire.

“I suspect they’ll do it again but I don’t know where because there’s quite a lot of bushland here,” Lauren said.

“I couldn’t sleep last night thinking they were going to light another fire, you just don’t feel safe in your own neighbourhood.

“It’s like they’re trying to be known — they want people to be scared.”
