The man, who was wearing a Megadeth t-shirt and cargo shorts, had been drinking at Elgin’s on Tuesday night.
He left a downstairs area and headed upstairs, breaking into another bar which was closed.
Once inside, he swigged from several liquor bottles in what owner Tom Weatherall described as “taste testing”.
The man then attempted to steal bottles of alcohol, but appeared to be unsuccessful due to intoxication.
Mr Weatherall described the man as a “lowlife” and “a really unpleasant human being”.
“He’s an opportunistic thief who really did a despicable act on Christmas,” he said.
“I think he’s a lowlife, whoever he is.
“He caused us to get rid of $3000 or $4000 worth of booze.
“We weren’t sure whether he drank it, but we weren’t prepared to take the risk and disturb people with the idea he might have had his lips around various bottles.”
Mr Weatherall said he had caused $2000 damage to a metal grille while breaking into the bar, and had probably only drunk $30 worth of alcohol.
“Why cause $2000 worth of damage on the way to steal $30?” he said.
“He’s just a lowlife.
“By the time he tried to take his ill-gotten gains, he was somewhat inebriated.”
Police have released an image of a man they want to speak to.
He is of slim build with a black Megadeth t-shirt, shaved head and grey cargo camouflage shorts.
Anyone with information on his identity is asked to contact Wodonga police on 02 6049 2600 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
