Police have questioned the driver of the Holden Commodore after the vehicle skidded out of control and hit a road safety sign on Hague Street yesterday.
The man fled the scene after the crash with several people in another car, but was stopped by Albury officers a short time later.
Nearby resident George, who asked for his last name to be withheld, said he heard tyres screeching for about three seconds, followed by a “huge crash” about 10am.
“He crashed into one of those 40km/h solar panel speed signs,” he said.
“He went backwards into it.
“He won’t be driving that car again in a hurry.”
George said the two cars may have been drag racing as they were travelling in close proximity.
Both cars had P-plates displayed.
“I was told the car had been travelling at 120km/h,” he said.
“It’s a bit of a worry that we get a few hoons around here, but these blokes seem to be the worst of the lot.
“There’s no way they’d be doing the speed limit.”
The car was a write-off after the crash with significant damage to the rear of the vehicle.
“I’m quite happy these hoons are off the road quite frankly,” George said.
“We’ve got young kids up and down the street and there’s a school down the road too.”
Sgt Matt Zemaitis said police were investigating but charges had not been laid.
“We’re just making some further inquiries,” he said.
