LIFESAVERS continue to pore over the city's coastline on Sunday morning after a five-metre great white shark closed all Newcastle's beaches on Saturday.
All Newcastle Beaches were shut on Saturday afternoon following the sighting.
Nobbys and Stockton have re-opened on Sunday morning.
Initially, Newcastle was the only beach remaining open as the strip from Bar Beach to Merewether was closed following the initial sighting at 1pm.
Lifeguards spotted a five-metre Great White around 1pm and promptly pulled swimmers from the water.
The entire coastline was closed after a second alarm, at Newcastle beach, sounded about 4.30pm.
Beaches will remain closed, possibly into Sunday morning, if the shark remains in the region.
Early reports indicated the shark may have had a pup with it.
UPDATE: Beaches from Bar Beach to Merewether will not reopen on Saturday, after a Great White Shark was spotted by lifeguards.
The shark alarm sounded around 1pm on Saturday, with beachgoers streaming from the water.
Lifeguards on a Jet Ski confirmed the sighting and made the decision to close all beaches in the area.
The shark is believed to be about five metres in length.
Lifeguards will continue to monitor the movements of the shark, and may be assisted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, if it is available.
Beaches will not reopen on Saturday and may remain closed for Sunday morning, if the Shark remains in the area.
Merewether Ocean Baths will remain open for those looking to hit the water.
DIXON PARK and Merewether Beach have been shut after a Great White Shark was spotted on Saturday afternoon.
Beachgoers came streaming out of the water, after the shark alarm sounded around 1pm, after lifeguards made the discovery.
Lifeguards are currently tracking the shark and monitoring its movements, and the beaches will remain closed until further notice.
