The Canberra-trained gelding is being hailed the “king of the southern district country cup scene” after claiming the win just weeks after taking out the Adelong Cup.
Trained by Barbara Joseph and Paul Jones, the four-year-old chestnut overcame a shaky turn to hurtle down the straight and win by a short half-head.
The win was made all the more memorable for siblings Joseph and Jones after the Garry Gillespie Constructions Tumut Cup (1400m) was delayed by a mid-afternoon storm.
According to the pair’s website, the owners of the well-built gelding had a nervous wait to see how the downpour had affected the track.
“Fortunately the weather fined up relatively quickly but the owners had an anxious wait to see if the program would go ahead and that the track had not been adversely affected, as Girls Own is a duffer on a soft track,” the website stated yesterday.
However, luck was on the team’s side and Girls Own jumped to the front from the inside barrier but wobbled around the home turn and let the Doug Cole-trained Brimstone pinch a length’s lead at the top of the straight.
“However, Girls Own wasn’t going to give in and, with Carly Frater urging him along, he pinned his ears back and got up to win by a short half-head on the line,” Joseph and Jones racing website said.
“This was Carly’s first cup win and she has the determination and ability to ensure that she gathers quite a collection during her career.”
Brimstone, Thetoppie, trained by John Brennan, and Rob Wellington’s charge Joranda Falls finished second, third and fourth respectively.
