The bruised face, swollen eye and the cracked ribs are sufficient for us all to say “enough!” to alcohol-fuelled violence.
Mr Rivett was doing his job, as were the police officers who had to tackle a group of drunken thugs in a separate incident in Guinea Street, also on Sunday night.
Neither Mr Rivett nor the police officers should have to bear the violence of those who don’t like it when their misbehaviour is challenged and they are apprehended for doing the wrong thing.
Both are tough jobs and most of the time people behave themselves when police and security personnel try to maintain a safe environment in which everyone can have a good time.
It’s abhorrent that on a holiday weekend, when people should be enjoying a break and a pleasant time with friends and family that there are those who cannot control themselves.
As a community we need to give our full support to those charged with keeping us safe and demand the appropriate punishment for those who do the wrong thing.
