Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, will join retired Australian Defence Force chief Angus Houston as the country’s next knights, an honour reintroduced by Mr Abbott last year.
The decision caused controversy on social media and among politicians.
Member for Indi Cathy McGowan said it came as a surprise to her and others attending Australia Day ceremonies in the North East.
Ms McGowan attended three separate ceremonies yesterday at Tarrawingee, Greta and Glenrowan.
“The reaction has not been positive from those I have spoke to,” she said.
Member for Farrer Sussan Ley yesterday questioned the need for the prestigious honour.
“Australia Day honours always throw up some debate and perhaps, at first glance, some might question the need for this honour,” she said.
“But keep in mind this is a man who has assisted thousands of young Aussies through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.”
