It is a pity innovative and imaginative thinking has been lost in this modern world of politics.
The opening of certain disused railway lines as rail trails could be a masterstroke.
At present, they are an just an eyesore on our community.
Many are overgrown, just a mass of grass, weeds and trees.
What’s more, they will continue to deteriorate over time.
Imagine if the government gave a bit of funding to develop such rail trails.
The rail corridors would be clear- ed and maintained, mainly using volunteer labour.
The benefit to regional tourism cannot be underestimated.
Country towns desperately need projects to inject some activity so they can survive.
The land would remain in government ownership, so if circumstances changed and a reversion to a train line was required, the process would be easily facilitated.
A win for everyone.
