A local charity raising funds for a school for vulnerable schoolchildren in Kenya is hoping to bring Wodonga’s sporting spirit alive this weekend.
The Mlebinge Mwashite Foundation is inviting all soccer fans to head down to Hovell Street on Saturday night to watch the Socceroos in the Asian Cup, on The Cube’s big screen.
Tennis more your thing? They’ve got you covered, and will be screening the Australian Open men’s final on Sunday night.
Foundation president, Penny Vine, said the fledgling charity wanted to come up with a unique fund-raiser and thought using The Cube’s TV and courtyard in this way would be a great way to not only spread their message, but get the community out and about.
The charity started just last year, and is named for the late wife of Wodonga man William Etulo, who arrived from Kenya in 2013 with his children.
All funds raised go directly to the Kangaroo School in Kabiria, a slum in Nairobi. The school is exclusively for children in the area who would otherwise be unable to get an education.
“We’ve been helping them cover the cost of rent and food at the school but they need a lot more help,” Dr Vine said.
Head to The Cube with picnic blankets, chairs and nibbles from 8pm Saturday and 7pm Sunday.
Entry is $5 per person or $20 per family.
