Mr Bowring moved to the Border in 2001 to take up a position as advertising and pre-press manager with The Border Mail.
In 2007 he was appointed general manager of the newspaper and last year he combined that role with a new appointment as media sales director for Victoria.
Mr Bowring said he was looking forward to some time out ahead of exploring new opportunities.
“Fairfax is moving towards a centralised management structure for its regional publications,” he said.
“There were ongoing opportunities but I think the timing is right to move on and try my hand at something else.
“It has been a great privilege to lead the team at The Border Mail and it remains one of, if not, the best regional daily paper in Australia.
“No other paper has been recognised so often and over such a long period of time, it is a great credit to all the staff at The Border Mail.”
Mr Bowring said there had been significant changes in the media industry during his 13 years at The Border Mail, the most significant being the birth of social media and its impact on people’s everyday lives and habits.
“While an enormous challenge for traditional publishers it has resulted in a huge increase in audience accessing local news via our website and smartphone app,” he said.
“I am confident that there are exciting times ahead for The Border Mail and I am delighted that senior managers editor Di Thomas, media director Craig Cleary and production manager Matt Fowler will continue to lead the team into the new year and beyond.
“It is difficult to leave an organisation that has meant so much to me and my family but I am looking forward to a new beginning ... after having some time out.”
