Police are trying to trace the source of the triple-0 call by a man who said he had used a shotgun to kill his partner.
Fearing there was a gunman on the loose, police closed off Morrison Street at Melbourne Road.
They then closed in on the house with guns drawn.
They found there had been no shooting and no one had been injured.
A man at the house was hand-cuffed and taken into custody.
He was later released and it is believed he had not been involved in the hoax call.
Many neighbours looked on with interest as the drama unfolded.
Paramedics remained on standby until the incident was resolved.
Wodonga had called Wangaratta police for assistance but they were quickly told they were not required.
