The man, 50, appeared in Albury Local Court charged with two counts of indecent assault with a girl under 16 and one count of sexual intercourse with a child aged between 10 and 14.

Court registrar Wendy Howard explained the onus was on him to “show cause” why he should not remain in custody.

“The indication in the police facts is you have made partial admissions,” she said.

Ms Howard refused bail and remanded the man to appear before magistrate Tony Murray on Monday through a video link from jail.

It is alleged the victim was 13 when the alleged assaults occurred in August 2013.

She had come from another NSW regional city to Albury with her mother for a family gathering.

Police became aware of the allegations last November and the girl was interviewed.

Earlier this month there was a legally recorded interview between the girl’s mother and the man, who allegedly made some admissions about his behaviour.

Police prosecutor Sgt Steve Bosch opposed bail, saying the three offences were serious.

It was suggested having the man on bail could be a risk and Sgt Bosch said the victim was vulnerable.

Solicitor Suryan Chandrasegaran said there was no dispute the charges were serious, but the man had no previous convictions.

Mr Chandrasegaran said the man was prepared to comply with bail conditions.

He had been told in November that allegations had been made against him.

“He has not sought to flee the jurisdiction or hide himself,” Mr Chandrasegaran said.

He said the man could report daily to police in Albury and apprehended violence order conditions could be imposed to keep him away from the girl.

There was a huge backlash against amendments to the Bail Act, which came into force on May 20 last year. Police said it was confusing and many offenders facing serious charges were released from custody.

But it led to the government ordering a review and changes being made, which came into force this week.
