Jill was responding to some talk back radio hosts who obviously must support the execution of the two ring leaders of the Bali Nine.
Humans are animals and that is why in civilised countries there are laws by which we attempt to live.
We have a justice system that appropriately sentences the perpetrators who break these laws.
Australia has around 34,000 prisoners of which 92 per cent are males and 8 per cent females.
Sixty-three per cent of the prisoners are recidivists — these were given a second chance but blew it and ended up back in prison.
Some prisoners will never get out such as Roger Dean (34 years old) — given 349 years; Ivan Milat (68 years old) — given 181 years; and Martin Bryant (46 years old) — given 1652 years.
By the way it costs $300 per day to keep a prisoner locked up.
One of the most recent convicted killers is Brett Peter Cowan (45 years old) who sexually assaulted and killed 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe back in 2003.
He only got a non-parole period of 20 years which means we could see him getting his second chance when he turns 65. Won’t that be a day for celebration!
There are also 300 criminally insane people being held as they are unfit to stand trial or cannot judge right from wrong. Should they be released and given a second chance?
So as Jill stated, “We are all human beings and we owe it to each other to give someone a second chance.”
Drugs destroy human lives and drug smugglers don’t deserve a second chance especially when they are fully aware that if they get caught they won’t be given one.
