A 34-year-old Wodonga man had been driving a Greenfreight truck on the Murray Valley Highway about 12.20pm Thursday.
The vehicle rolled onto its side, slid about 60 metres, and rolled again when it hit an embankment.
The force of the crash separated the truck’s cab from its trailer, with the cab landing on its wheels and the trailer landing on its roof.
Nearby resident Jim Boyle said the driver had been “very lucky to get out of it”.
“The cabin was torn off ... he more or less climbed out,” Mr Boyle said.
“He had just a few scratches.
“He was so lucky.”
Dozens of wooden pallets were scattered along the road.
“We’ve lived here for over 20 years and we’ve had at least four truck crashes,” Mr Boyle said.
Emergency services attended a two car crash and a truck rollover on the stretch of road, within close proximity of each other, last November.
Thursday’s crash took more than 12 hours to clear.
Leading Sen-Constable Guy Tinsley said police were trying to work out what caused the truck to roll.
“It’s not a high speed crash,” he said.
“He didn’t make it around the corner.”
Driver complacency is being looked at as a possible cause and mechanical faults have been ruled out, and drug and alcohol tests returned a negative result.
“Drivers should pay attention while they’re driving,” Leading Sen-Constable Tinsley said.
