The 74-year-old Nagambie man was kayaking in the Mitta River when his vessel overturned about 1.30pm yesterday.
The man was seen attempting to swim to shore before going under the water.
The body was located around 3pm on Saturday and police say a report will now be prepared for the coroner.
EARLIER: POLICE divers and emergency services last night were searching for a man feared drowned in the Mitta River in what has been a horror summer on the water.
The alarm was raised about 1.30pm after the man’s kayak was found overturned.
Emergency crews attended the scene, near Tallangatta, and searched by land and boat.
Police divers from Melbourne arrived yesterday afternoon and continued the search until dark.
The man, 75, was staying with friends on a nearby property.
The incident comes after two other drownings on Border waterways this summer.
In December, Lavington fisherman Roger Bradney, 65, drowned after his boat got into trouble on the Murray River at Bungowannah.
Mr Bradney had tried to help his mate Mark Kendrick, who had been swept overboard from their tinnie after a fishing line got caught on the propeller.
Then last month, Melbourne suburban football club identity Marty Humphreys drowned after getting into trouble in Lake Mulwala.
Wodonga police Sgt Mick Bourke said it served as a warning to those using waterways.
“It is always a good idea for people to communicate their plans,” he said.
“Those on the water should always be in a group of at least two.”
