The former Hobart Chargers standout is one of the most explosive players in the league and is expected to be the crown jewel in Bandits coach Brad Chalmers’ recruiting blitz.
George, along with US imports Cory Dixon and Donte Nicholas, Waratah league MVP Daniel Sepokas and Townsville Crocodiles centre Claybrin McMath, are the key cogs in what has been a huge off-season of player turnover at the Border outfit.
But having suffered through a cellar-dwelling, turmoil-filled season of his own with Hobart, George said he was looking forward to helping the Bandits return to post-season action for the first time since their fairytale championship win in 2012.
“I see us making the playoffs and hopefully getting to the finals,” he said.
“As for me as a player, I’ll be doing what I can to help the team win in any way that I can.
“Just getting the ball to the right player at the right time, being vocal as a leader and doing what I can to help.
“I’ll try to be the general out there, and help the guys, experience-wise.
“Not try to do too much; just make sure we do everything as a group, try to gel as a team as quickly as we can.”
Chalmers and the Bandits experienced first-hand what George was capable of when the former Cairns Taipans guard scorched the Border outfit for 42 points in July last year.
George nailed the game-winner — as well as seven baskets from beyond the three-point arc — that night as the Chargers recorded a gutsy 101-100 win.
That display, as well as several other scoring bombardments, ensured Chalmers was especially keen to see George in Albury-Wodonga colours this year.
“There’s been some excellent imports in the league, but for pure explosiveness and an ability to fill the stat sheet, I think he’s in the top two or three guys in the league,” Chalmers said.
“And he’s been doing that for the past two or three years.
“First-hand we had 42 points dropped on us here last year in pretty quick time, he’s a dynamic player and my opinion is his talents should be on display at the next level as well.
“Hopefully he can play really well this year and he gets that opportunity — and I think those opportunities come if we’re winning.
“If we can keep getting wins, I think good things will happen for him and some of the other guys here as well.”
While George still harbours ambitions of playing in the NBL again, he said he was only looking at how he could help the Bandits win.
“If I get the opportunity to play NBL, I will,” he said.
“Right now, I’m just focused on this team — the Bandits — and doing my best here.
“Whatever I get out of that, if it’s the NBL, I’ll try to make the most of it.”
